Nepal: Man visits, forgives suspected bomber who killed wife, daughter

4 07 2009

ForgivenessBalan Joseph Palamootil, whose wife and daughter were killed in the May 23 bombing of a Katmandu parish, has visited and forgiven the chief suspect in the case. “When I saw Sita, I was reminded of the story of Saint Paul, who persecuted Christians and I thought of how Sita might also have this same experience of conversion,” he said. “So, I conveyed Christ’s message of love and forgiveness to her.” – Catholic World News (17 June 09)

There is also another report by Fides Service about the testimony given by Balan Joseph.

I’m deeply moved to read about the witness of Christians who, in spite of their sufferings, are faithful to Christ’s command to love the enemy and pray for those who persecute them(Mt 5:44). This story maybe especially near to the hearts of some of the YCS members of Kuching since the daughter of this man is Celestine Joseph; she was supposed to be one of the delegates from YCS Nepal to attend the 11th Asian Session & Council of the IYCS here at St Lukas Centre, Kuching. During one of the evenings of the ASC, the delegates and organisers held Taize prayer in solidarity with YCS Nepal to remember Celestine and to pray for peace. You read more about the tragedy of the bomb blast here. Eternal rest grant on to her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
